I am College Board

Read carefully the following poem written by William Cullen Bryant. Then in a well-written eassay, analyze the literary devices the author uses in the poem, and determine how they contribute to the poem's greater meaning.

The Yellow Violet

BY WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT
When beechen buds begin to swell,
And woods the blue-bird’s warble know,
The yellow violet’s modest bell
Peeps from the last year’s leaves below.
Ere russet fields their green resume,
Sweet flower, I love, in forest bare,
To meet thee, when thy faint perfume
Alone is in the virgin air.
Of all her train, the hands of Spring
First plant thee in the watery mould,
And I have seen thee blossoming
  Beside the snow-bank’s edges cold.
Thy parent sun, who bade thee view
Pale skies, and chilling moisture sip,
Has bathed thee in his own bright hue,
And streaked with jet thy glowing lip.
Yet slight thy form, and low thy seat,
And earthward bent thy gentle eye,
Unapt the passing view to meet
When loftier flowers are flaunting nigh.
Oft, in the sunless April day,
  Thy early smile has stayed my walk;
But midst the gorgeous blooms of May,
I passed thee on thy humble stalk.
So they, who climb to wealth, forget
The friends in darker fortunes tried.
I copied them—but I regret
That I should ape the ways of pride.
And when again the genial hour
Awakes the painted tribes of light,
I’ll not o’erlook the modest flower
That made the woods of April bright.

MY thoughts about the Senior Project

Overall I really didn't like the Senior project. I honestly thought that It was a waste of my time because, There was alot to do and the whole process was tedious. I didn't have a problem completing the tasks it's just that I felt that some of the forms to complete were unnecessary and did not aid in educating me. To be honest I really don't think that there could have been anything to do to make the process easier or to more helpful. With that being said, I'm not saying that the process is helpless I'm just saying that you did a very good job to make the process easy for us in relation to Mrs kuyler's class. The only suggestion I have is to lower the number of bib cards that are needed to get a good grade maybe like 35 because they were helpful but annoying.

Dear Estella

Hello Estella my name is Abdullay Sanoe and I would consider myself a realist from the United States. I personally wanted to know why you are so fake. When I say fake it is a colloquial term meaning deceitful or shifty. I say this because you are very haughty and constantly lead men on with intentions of breaking their hearts later on, especially Pip. I understand that it was not fully your fault but I am also sure that you were old enough to realize what you were doing and know that you were wrong in doing so and the consequences of such. You trained as a lady and built am image of one of a higher social class but I know the real you, or at least I know of the information about your past. I know that currently your mother is a house maid who works for Jagger named Molly and I also know that your father was a convict named Magwitch. With that being said you are no better than anyone, especially Pip as you both have similar past situations. Sure you are beautiful, but your beauty is not a justification for your actions. The way you behave towards men and even people in general is synonymous to that of the way people treat pawns in the game of chess. You use men for your own selfish gains and you treat them as if they are insignificant creatures whose sole purpose of existence is to fawn over and acknowledge your presence. I honestly despise fake people and people like you. I feel that the way you behaved is not how a human being is supposed to behave to another human being. I also feel that you got your just deserts in losing your social esteem and being unhappily married to your late husband. I really feel that you should have taken Pips offer in his marriage to you. Pip unlike Drummle is a kind guy and would have been a perfect match for you while he was younger. I like your change in character but I am disappointed to realize that it took you 11 years and an unpleasant marriage to realize your mistakes in life. Ultimately though, I am happy that you did eventually change for the better. I just wanted to get my thoughts out and really have nothing more to say.

                                                                                              Sincerely Abdullay

Beloved VS. Beloved

I am not a movie critic but if I was then I would say that the Movie version of “Beloved” was ok. When I say ok it’s more between great and decent.  To be honest I don’t really like to watch movies from 2006 and below just because my eyes have become accustomed to a type of definition. Now with that being said I won’t knock the movie because of the effects because I realize that technology wasn’t as advanced as it is now. I will say though that the movie worked within their limits as far as trying to capture on film a novel such as Beloved. The only problem (besides the definition), is some actors and the fact that the directors or whoever failed to allow the viewers to view some background knowledge about the people at sweet home which in a sense takes away a huge part of the novel.  I also felt that the directors focused too much on the eerie nature of the novel, as it wasn’t the whole point or theme of the novel.
For me personally, the movie adaptation of the novel failed, with the casting of the actors for the roles of the characters from the book. The first example of this being Danny Glover. When I envisioned Paul D., I thought of a young handsome and muscular type of man (no offense to Danny Glover). In the movie Danny Glover seemed a little stiff and not fluid to me. In the novel Paul D. was smooth and he talked in a way that made people want to listen to him. Paul D. was basically good with the ladies, but from reading the body language of Danny Glover I did not see that. An example of this would be the scene in which, Paul D. met Seethe. If I was Seethe and Danny was talking to me the way he did I would seem uninterested and really bored. The other actor That I found a problem with was the actor playing Denver. I felt that her acting was weak and did not particularly fit the role of Denver. Denver was a character that has been through much emotional and Physiological despair being a child in a haunted house and basically being isolated from the outside world. The actor playing Denver’s acting was lackluster and showed no emotion for someone playing the character Denver. The scenes that I really had a problem with from this actor were the one when Paul D. came into the home and she started crying and the scene when Beloved was introduced. I thought in these scenes her acting was really poor.
The Directors did not find some way to inform the viewers on the past of the characters at sweet home such as Paul D. and Seethe. This simple neglect really hurt the movie adaptation because so much of the novel was about the past and embracing it so that one may be able to move on to the future. The task of simply having characters have a flashback of their past would have suffice. If the directors would have filled those gaps the, it would have been easier for the audience to feel pathos for Seethe and Paul D.
The eriee nature of the novel I feel was emphasized more than it should have. There were things that added, to that horror movie type of feel from the spooky music, to the scenes of poltergeists, the insanity of Seethe and the acting of Beloved. I felt that this side of the novel should have been toned down a bit and should only be there so show the pain that the characters are going thorough and their mental deterioration.
Aside from the Problems named above the movie was great. I give the directors credit because the novel Beloved was in fact hard to showcase on the big screen. The movie adaptation worked within its limits and really is all that it could do. There are just some things in a novel that a movie cannot do and try as they might the directors could not change that such as being inside the heads of different characters and the stream of consciousness of the three characters within the novel. Like I said the directors tried and in their efforts they did okay which is all you can ask for, and which is what the movie adaptation showed.

The second debate

I thought that this debate was better than the first one mainly due to the fact that you did not participate in the debating. I also thought that my team won, because we had the better argument. The other team continually brought up the argument about the kkk, however we continued to thrash it down. The other team was a bit clearer in getting out their arguments but we as a team had better arguments and were better in defending our side. I really enjoyed this debate in a sense it felt easier than the last, probably because we had a little practice from the debate that we had before and we knew what to expect. I really didn't see any flaws that were in this debate I thought that everything ran smoothly despite the time issue at the end. As stated before this debate was good and I hope that we may have another.

Slavery and Beloved

http://thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/28/lincolns-legacy-fights-modern-slavery/

The article above focuses mainly on the Idea of slavery even after it was abolished 150 years ago. The article talks about modern slavery, its characteristics and those who are affected by it. The article begins with a victim Shelia white who was forced into prostitution on the streets of New York City in which she describes the feeling of self-deprivation that can occur. The article talks about the surprising number of people that are modern slaves, or those who are forced to do work against their will. The article goes on to state the amount of money that is received annually through this illegal business. The Polaris project is an anti-trafficking organization that helps former modern slaves and tries to raise awareness and ultimately stop the trafficking of humans. This article relates to the novel Beloved in the sense that the modern slaves of today are a lot like the slaves depicted in the novel. Like Sethe white was forced to do work and beaten if she disobeyed. The gross realization that this sort of thing is still happening today especially in the United States you wonder whether our society is as good as we think it is.

To Be Loved or Not to Be loved

From my experiences with life, family and reading various novels the question of whether the past ever dies is a hard one. For some people it is easy to live by the saying "Forgive and Forget" but to what extent is that saying true and to what extent do the people really live by that saying. I would say that the past does not die and stays with us but it takes the person to be able to not dwell in the past and move on with the present and subsequently the future.

The past cannot ever die metephorically speaking because it is a composition of memories that we as humans might find important. No matter how much we fool ourselves and say that the past never happened all we are doing is further sinking ourselves in a hole of misery. In the case of Berniece from the piano lesson, her inability to let go of the past (not forget) affected her, and the people that she loved in a negative way. The person that was being hurt the most was her child. All the talk of the ghost and and the constant fighting between Berniece and Boy Willie added up and affected the mental stability of the child so much so that she feared sleeping up stairs for fear of the ghost. One reason that the past cannot die is because we are constantly reminded of the past by things that area associated with the past in out everyday lives. Using the piano lesson, as an example again, the piano for Berniece was a constant reminder of the past, of her parents of which she felt that she could not give away, destroy or throw out. It is because of this constant reminder that some people often get consumed by the past and cannot lead normal lives. This example is also present in  the novel Beloved, where Paul D. Garner and Seathe's daughter Denver are a reminder to Seathe, of Sweet Home and the atrocities that she survived through. The Painfull memories of being raped and Wipped like a dog. Theses reason are why the past cannot "die", but like I said before it takes a strong someone to acknowledge the past with all that it bears and move on.
